British TV and Production Companies

I have a real hate for British TV, personally I believe American TV series are so much better, more interesting and more visually appealing, but as a production designer living in England I don't have much option than to start where I am,
So gritting my teeth here are a few British TV shows that aren't so bad

Paramount Comedy channel"Comedy Central (formerly Paramount Comedy) is a cable and satellite channel that shows mainly American sitcoms imports. Amongst re-runs of classic British series and stand-up shows like Live At The Apollo, it is now expanding its own slate of original UK content. A series of short-lived 1990s commissions saw early television work for some now star names, including Matt Lucas and Simon Pegg."

PARAMOUNT IS COMEDY CENTRAL WHO'D HAVE THOUGHT?! okay so change of title.. Comedy Central UK
"You might think we’re just a bunch of chancers having a bit of a fart around on the internet, but guess what - we’re a proper company with a TV channel and everything.
That’s right, the same brand of nonsense we produce online is also available piped in directly to your TV screens, only with proper production values and lots of beautiful actor people.
As well as the endlessly brilliant Friends, we’ve got all manner of great US shows, like South Park, The Middle, Two and a Half Men, The US Office and The Daily Show, and a bunch of our own original creations which are screaming down the pipeline as we speak. Not to mention more funny British stand-ups that you can shake a stick at."
Not sure if comedy central is a production comapny or just a tv channel...
maybe it is sometimes:

http://www.imdb.com/company/co0239378/
As well as Comedy Central, Viacom also owns MTV Networks and Nickelodeon, as well as all related TV channels, including Nick Jr and Viva.
So, for all current available vacancies at Comedy Central or our brother and sister channels, please go to Viacom Talent.

okay, so that's that. we have a few okay British TV shows and some pretty good production companies, hopefully later in life all this information will come in use.
PS. don't think comedy central is a production company, i think they're the masters of the channel and don't do much in terms of creating the programs themselves.

Kirkleatham Museum - SIFI exhibition

October of last year I attended a Museum exhibition at Kirkleatham museum, It was based on a load of different sifi movies. My faourite (the only films ive seen) were Star Wars and The Alien vs Predator.
The quality of the photos arent very good, as they were taken on my phone.

Star Wars

Plot: Luke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a wookiee and two droids to save the universe from the Empire's world-destroying battle-station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the evil Darth Vader.

Star Wars, Directed and wrote by George Lucas.
Production Designer: John Barry
Costume designer: Trisha Biggar
Andrew Ainsworth designed the original stormtrooper costume in 1976

Alien vs Predator

Plot: During an archaeological expedition on Bouvetøya Island in Antarctica, a team of archaeologists and other scientists find themselves caught up in a battle between the two legends. Soon, the team realize that only one species can win.

H. R. Giger designed the aliens and predators.
He lived a very sucsessful and famous life after these major creations and it wasnt untill earlier this year his
career ended as did he.
Giger's most distinctive stylistic innovation was that of a representation of human bodies and machines in a cold, interconnected relationship, he described as "bio-mechanical". His main influences were painters Ernst Fuchs and Salvador DalĂ.

  • Bojack Horseman
  • The Killing
  • Sense 8

My favorite of them all is Orange is the New Black, simply for the intricate characters.
People seem to think of prisons as a place full of crazy bad people, this show opens you mind to see them as actually normal people who made mistakes to get through life. Its wonderful. And the scenes are perfectly shot, every angle has been thought through, I really think Netflix are perfectionists when it comes to creating their own programs.

UK Filming Production directory

A list of independent production companies.
http://thetvroom.com/misc/links-01-70.html

One of the companies that stood out for me:
"MENTORN FILMS Mentorn Media's output has a breadth and quality that ranks it as one of the UK's foremost producers. Established in 1985, Mentorn Media is one of the UK's longest established independent television production companies, making thousands of hours for broadcasters in the UK and worldwide. Our offices in London, Oxford, Cardiff and Glasgow produce programmes across a range of genres."

Another list of independent production companies in the UK

I then googled "independent production companies based in the north east of england" and this came up:

North East missing out on TV and film production money

High hopes eey

Anyway, here is a list of independent production companies in the North East (England)
NORTHERN FILM & MEDIA IS A SCREEN-BASED MEDIA AND CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT AGENCY COMMITTED TO DRIVING FILM, TV AND DIGITAL ARTS PROJECTS. Hungry Wolf Productions is a TV & film production company
Dan Perry Productions produces high quality content for film, television, documentary and corporate projects from pre-production through to filming and post-production.

The Throne

This is from a project I did at my college, last year. It was my final piece and most definitely my best work, although I never felt like it was fully finished. I believe I could have added more detail to it, as that is what makes a piece. What I really would have like to have done is make it very modern gothic with embossed bronze swirls and painted lace detail around the edge of the back of the throne, near the spikes. I also planned on added bones to it, but unable to attach them securely I just kept them as decoration.  I still have the throne, and may one day sell it if i ever do finish it.

History of the BBC and TV

http://www.bbc.co.uk/historyofthebbc/resources/tvhistory/

"Thus, the French say both Belin and Barthelemy were the inventors of television; the Japanese believe it was Takayanagi; the Russians say Boris Rosing; the Germans either Nipkow or Karolus; the Hungarians von Mihaly; in the USA most people believe it was either Jenkins or Farnsworth; and in the UK we have the choice of Campbell-Swinton for the concept, or John Logie Baird for television's practical demonstration"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/historyofthebbc/resources/tvhistory/baird_bbc.shtml

"The 'money to develop it' would come from the sale of television sets (or as Baird called them 'Televisors'). However, there was a major snag. In order to sell the sets you have to have programmes to watch - a television service. Baird built a television studio in Long Acre (Covent Garden) and experimented with a small transmitter, but he soon realised that he needed a much more powerful transmitter to broadcast his programmes. The BBC had such a transmitter, called 2LO, situated on the roof of Selfridges in London. 2LO was used for daily 'wireless' programmes, but the BBC service closed down in the evening at about 11pm and often did not re-start until mid-morning. So Baird approached the BBC for permission to use the transmitter during these periods"

Eventually the BBC agreed that Baird could use the transmitter between those times, but the thing is for tele you need two transmitters so for the next six months he ran tv but with picture for so many seconds then he'd have to change to sound.
it all seems like a lot of hassle compared to how easy and fast it is to watch tv now.

In march 1930 the BBC had opened a second transmitter, and so simultaneous sound and picture transmissions began. 3 months later the first televised play happened, The man with a flower in his mouth. Produced by the BBC's Lance Sieveking.

The launch of the first High definition service in 1936 after the war, by this point BBC had taken over all of the tv transmission

The origins of Television

Paul Gottlieb Nipkow

In the late 1800s, Paul Gottlieb Nipkow, a student in Germany, developed the first ever mechanical module of television. He succeeded in sending images through wires with the help of a rotating metal disk. This technology was called the ‘electric telescope’ that had 18 lines of resolution. http://www.thehistoryoftelevision.com

John Logie Baird

In January, 1926 an English man made the first RCA victor television receiver, basically an image receiver, known as "the televisor". The man was called, John Logie Baird. Who's invent didn't really catch on at first, well due to the war in the 30's but then came back bigger than ever after the war.

"They were shown a transmitting machine, consisting of a large wooden revolving disc containing lenses, behind which was a revolving shutter and a light sensitive cell. It was explained that by means of the shutter and lens disc an image of articles or persons standing in front of the machine could be made to pass over the light sensitive cell at high speed. The current in the cell varies in proportion to the light falling on it, and this varying current is transmitted to a receiver where it controls a light behind an optical arrangement similar to that at the sending end. By this means a point of light is caused to traverse a ground glass screen. The light is dim at the shadows and bright at the high lights, and crosses the screen so rapidly that the whole image appears simultaneously to the eye." http://www.bairdtelevision.com/firstdemo.html

"John Logie Baird of Scotland was the first to come up with the idea of a "television transmitter" and created the first television using the inventions of others. Baird began to show off his invention, in 1923 and after some perfecting the television began to be commercialized. By 1936, the BBC began television broadcasting using the Baird television. In 1939, there were a reported 20,000 television sets in London alone. While the invention was genius, it was also unreliable.

Philo Farnsworth

In 1928, the young American Philo Farnsworth made the first (reliable and working) television system. Though others had a hand in it and many attempted to produce their own versions of the television, Farnsworth is credited with inventing the modern day television off of which the first wide spread commercial production was made. By the 1940's televisions began to be mass produced and pretty soon nearly everyone had one." http://www.firsttelevisioninvented.com

UK Production Companies

My tutor advised us that we should be looking at production companies in the UK rather than thinking we can just straight to Hollywood, so here I have a list of  some UK Production Companies:

I found these companies on www.televisual.com
  • Blueprint pictures- Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin.
    Films: Seven psychopaths
    Contact: enquiries@blueprintpictures.com

  • Big talk productions- founded by Nira park, Matthew Justice and Kenton Alley
Films: Scott Pilgramme vs. the world, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Paul, Attack of the Block.
TV: Spaced, Black Books, Friday Night Dinner, Rev.
    Contact: Jobs@bigtalkproductions.com
    www.bigtalkproductions.com
  • Heyday Films- David Heyman
Films: Harry Potter Films, I am Legend, Boy in the Striped Pjamas
    Contact: mailto:office@heydayfilms.com
I found a prop maker that worked on the 5th harry potter film, Mike Peel, whos website (http://www.stagejobspro.com/uk/view.php?uid=221870) also lead me to another minor prop company that worker on the Harry Potter film:
  • Armidillo LTD.
A company that works on order with sets, props and costumes. They specialise in Design and Construction  They've also done a lot of work with the BBC.
    Contact: Rod Vass- rod.vass@armidillo.co.uk

Lightwater Valley Post Halloween advertising and Pirates

These are just a few advertisements I seen for Lightwater Valley's Frightwater Halloween Night. These particularly interested me because my passion is horror props, and until this point i didnt realise how far being a prop designer could go. Theme parks are a whole world of props, set and costume, its like walking into a giant theatre but instead of watching it you get to experience it.

These are a few props from the Pirate section that caught my eye, simply because I believe one day I could make things as good as this. I may need to research on what and how these are made but I could go there eventually.

Tidying up Art by Ursus Wehrli, TEDTalks

This is TED talks, a page of videos on new ideas that will help us live better as human beings or just bring a little humor. This is part of the artists and illusions section of TED Talks, by Ursus Wehrli. His talk takes paintings of abstract patterns, sometimes thing like Picasso's paintings, then he orders them in colour, shapes and size. I think this is an amazing idea, very original but unoriginal in a way, its comforting to the eye to see all the shapes and colours in order. the comparison between the original and organised is hilarious, especially as he commentates it.

Victorian Architectural Drawings

Here I drew from the church outside our building in order to get the gist of drawing again. So this was from a primary source and i used only pens to draw these. I love the very Victorian style of the above picture, it almost looks like a coat of arms for something and once there was someones initials on it. These kind of patterns really interest me because of the seer royalty you can feel when you see it. Its not for purpose, it is for decoration and they are beautiful. I also love the geometric style of the church window below. It was terribly difficult to draw but the shapes all fit so perfectly together, it is an inspiration.
